WINTER - Did you know that WATER is the element associated with winter in Chinese Medicine?

In the Pacific Northwest we definitely receive it in abundance. Other winter aspects of the TCM “Five-Phase Associations” include a cold climate, the colour black (lack of light), and our kidneys and urinary bladders are the organs most often affected.

Seasonal ailments aggravated by cold/damp weather include Arthritis, which of may become acute during this season and other disharmonies such as head hair (dandruff) and bone problems (osteo-arthritis).

In the northern hemisphere we have two major events in winter:

  1. Winter Solstice (Dec 22nd) when our sun starts its journey back toward the equator bringing warmer temperatures; and
  2. Christmas and/or the Festive Season.

Allow me to offer you some helpful tips to maintain good health over the winter and the holidays in particular.

  • Pathogens (bacteria, viruses, etc.) thrive during the festive season due to increase in social interactions. Wash your hands thoroughly and often.

  • Stress will compromise your immune system so schedule time for exercise, rest, and relaxation. Visit the "Fish Pond" at www.hardmanacupuncture-tcm.com

  • Sugar has a very negative impact on your immune system. Eat sweets with moderation.

  • Winter is the season of cold/dampness (see arthritis above). Avoid cold drinks and foods. Consume water at ambient temperature or warmer.

  • Acupuncture is a proven method of naturally enhancing your immune system or Wei Qi, resolving stress and curbing your craving for sweets.
