The best way to ease neck pain?A recent study has found acupuncture better than massage therapy for relief of back and neck pain. Another recent study came out in favor of massage. Perhaps personal preference may guide
your choice. The study published in the June 30, 2003 issue of the British Medical Journal, reported that Imich and colleagues treated 177 people suffering from chronic neck pain with acupuncture, massage, or "sham" placebo laser acupuncture. After one week and five treatments, acupuncture recipients had a greater improvement in motion related to neck pain. Another recent study published in Archives of Internal Medicine found that when comparing acupuncture and massage for back pain, massage actually came out on top. The bottom line is that both of these treatments are natural and drug free, and the outcome is going to be affected by both the recipient and the practitioner. Acupuncture statistics compiled (by the Washington Acupuncture Center over a three year period),
demonstrated that of 2,182 cases treated for Chronic Pain and Whiplash Residuals,
87.7% reported significant improvement, 2% experienced no change. |
